Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh, and is also known as the City of Lakes. Split by a pair of lakes, Bhopal is two cities within a city, where the ancient and the modern form a beautifully unique amalgamation. Founded by the king Bhoja of the Paramara dynasty (1000-1055 CE), one can still find traces of cultures as different as those of Buddhists, Hindus, Moguls and Afghans, all of which have blended to perfection, providing Bhopal a distinct identity. The city has immense archaeological, historical and political importance attached to it. One of the oldest cities in India, it has today emerged as one of the busiest commercial centers. The city has a population of around 18 lakhs. Bhopal is at the centre of innovative creativity with its art galleries and visual or performing houses of excellence. With broad avenues, exquisitely laid out gardens and parks and buildings that bear an aristocratic stamp, Bhopal strikes the right cord between the new and the old.
Hindi is the common language spoken across the city of Bhopal. English is understood by all the educated population of the city. The official language for Shape South Asia ’17 event will be English.
